The data centre’s easter egg hunt for efficiency

Executive Summary

  • A data centre’s easter egg hunt is basically finding forgotten, untapped potential energy and utilising it to become more energy efficient.
  • Digital twins can be used to identify “golden eggs” – hot spots, cold sinks, or stranded capacity.
  • Having an efficient data centre allows us to grow in the digital world and ensure the digital heart of our society remains resilient, efficient and sustainable.

I do love tying seasonal calendar events to the data centre industry in creative, metaphorical ways – did you see my Christmas one on uptime and Die Hard? Easter is no different.

In this article, I compare how the industry’s hunt for efficiency is just like the Easter Egg Hunt you arranged for the kids yesterday.

Hunting for eggs in a data centre

Just as you’d go hunting around the house for the hidden eggs, operators use AI-driven monitoring to help them find pockets of “wasted energy” within their systems. With tighter regulations sweeping in around data centre energy and water efficiency and calls for more transparent reporting, data centre operators must eliminate zombie servers and hiccups in the systems where they can save energy.

Zombie servers are servers that are on, running and utilising energy, but there’s no useful output. Just like that one easter egg hidden at the back of the messy drawer in your house, forgotten about for an entire year. Can you imagine discovering a zombie server that’s been active for that entire year, and how much energy it took up?

Modern Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) leverages AI to hunt down “zombie servers”: hardware that draws power and requires cooling without processing a single byte of data. Once the AI identifies these drains on efficiency, it flags them for removal or “cracks them open” for reconfiguration, ensuring every watt of power serves a purpose.

Digital twins are the map to get the golden egg

Digital twins of your data centre infrastructure provide the ultimate map for this efficiency hunt. By leveraging Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), these twins visualise the invisible, pinpointing trapped heat in “hot spots” or identifying “cold sinks” where expensive chilled air leaks into empty spaces. These insights reveal your facility’s secret golden eggs, the hidden opportunities to slash waste and optimise performance.

AI and digital twins can simulate moves before you rearrange the racks for optimal space and cooling, so you can predict what the best move is for you before having to rearrange it all physically.

Stranded Capacity

Stranded capacity is the most valuable easter egg to find in a data centre. AI hunts down stranded capacity, the power and cooling solutions you pay for but fail to utilise due to poor environmental management.

Not that we “score” hunts anyway, but a data centre’s hunt score would be the PUE (power usage effectiveness), which is the true golden egg we’re after.

Easter is a time of renewal and refresh, and it’s akin to what cooling systems are going through right now; shifting from air cooling to liquid or even hybrid cooling is akin to re-doing a data centre’s biological footprint.

The ‘Easter Eggs’ in a data centre are pockets of untapped potential and efficiency, allowing us to improve data centre efficiency and drive growth in the industry simultaneously. Crafting effective, fluid cooling solutions that can scale and reduce depending on the workload, will allow us to grow in the digital world and ensure the digital heart of our society remains resilient, efficient and sustainable.
