For data centre operators, selecting the right uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solution is non-negotiable. But what about powering the UPS? Yuasa has launched the SWL+ industrial battery series, which aims to be the ‘new benchmark in VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries for standby applications’ with ‘longer life, more power, advanced technologies, and no compromise’.
The key benefits range from enhanced high-rate performance to handle the most demanding power requirements – for powering data centres and server farms, this ensures high-rate backup power during unexpected outages or surge conditions – to CAPEX savings and reduced total cost of ownership, including energy costs. The SWL+ batteries are also backwards compatible with the previous SWL range, allowing for easy upgrade without complex retrofitting.
One factor which remains vital for data centre operators is sustainability. Data centres are seeing greater power demand – an increase by 160% by 2030, according to Goldman Sachs – while the regulatory squeeze is also being put on. In Germany, for example, existing data centres must reach a PUE (power usage effectiveness) rating of less than 1.5 by July 2026, and less than 1.3 by July 2030.
At the heart of the SWL+ series, noting the sustainability element, is Hybrid Pure Lead technology—an advanced combination of primary pure lead and specialised recycled alloy. By incorporating a sustainable element alongside pure lead, this pioneering approach achieves increased corrosion resistance and extended battery life.
The carefully balanced alloy composition further enables higher energy density—vital for high-rate discharge scenarios where every second counts. This unique blend sets the SWL+ range apart from competitors, delivering improved longevity and dependable power. The SWL+ is up to 98% recyclable and produced in the UK, which enables circularity.
Another element of interest for data centre operators is the exclusive HT Element X Alloy™ technology, also made from hybrid pure lead. The technology tackles high temperature challenges head-on by reducing positive grid corrosion and water loss, which makes it ‘ideal’ for mission-critical UPS or installations where reliability is paramount.
“We’ve powered Europe’s skylines and critical infrastructure for decades,†said Andrew Taylor, CEO and managing director, GS Yuasa Battery Europe Ltd. “Now, the best just got better.
“The SWL+ series offers extended service life, improved high-rate discharge performance, and advanced technologies – all while maintaining seamless drop-in compatibility with existing SWL systems.
“It is a direct reflection of our commitment to continuous innovation and our customers’ evolving power needs,†Taylor added.
